History of the Kino game

Keno is quite possibly the oldest of all the gambling games that you will find at any casino, either online or off. Its roots go back to an ancient Chinese game that started over 3000 years ago. In fact, though the game has changed some since that time, it is quite surprising just how close the modern-day game is to the age-old one.

Three thousand years ago in China, the country was straining under the financial and emotional strain of a very costly war. In the many villages of the extraordinarily large country, the villagers refused to pay for anymore weapons or supplies for the war. A man named Cheung Leung decided he had to raise the money to fight the war, so he made up the game, hoping it would catch on and he could sell tickets to buy the much-needed supplies for the soldiers. His plan worked brilliantly.

The original game that Cheung invented was similar to today"s Keno in that it had 80 choices to pick from. The difference is that today we pick from 80 numbers, but back then they picked from 80 characters that were based on a very popular poem called the 1000 Characters poem. It is rumored that the game started with 120 characters, though this, like much of history so old, is unconfirmed. The game was sometimes referred to as the White Pigeon Game, because carrier pigeons were used to send the results from village to village, since roads at the time were scarce or poorly routed.

The game came to the US during the railroad boom in the 1800s. As railroads were being built along the newly-settled West coast of the United States, many Chinese immigrants came to work on them and settle there. In doing so, they brought much of their culture, including Keno. In fact the game was so much a part of the new Chinese-American fabric that it was known as the "Chinese Lottery" for years.

Though the casino operators in Las Vegas heard about the popular game in the early 20th century, they actually could not legally begin to offer the game in their city. The reason- gambling was completely legal, but lotteries were not. So some casinos changed the name from "Chinese Lottery" to "Race Horse Keno", replacing the numbers with race horses. When track betting was banned, they simply changed the name to Keno, and the name has stuck.

Online Keno Strategy

  • Decide if you want to win a large amount of money once or twice, or small amounts over several games. This will play hugely into your strategy.

  • If you wish to win bigger amounts, you will want to place a larger bet on a smaller number of games. For instance, if the minimum bet is $1, you may want to place several dollars on a game, that way your payout is much larger if you win. You will also have to pick the max amount of numbers, as this is the only way to get the large jackpot.

  • If you wish to simply have more playing time and don't necessarily care if you win the huge jackpot, you can pick fewer numbers. Doing so makes it easier for you to hit 100% of your numbers, thus ensuring a payout. However, the amount will be small, as your payout is proportional to the number of picks you made. Also, you would bet a smaller amount on each ticket, so that you can play more games. Your bankroll will last a whole lot longer this way.

  • Realize that numbers in Keno are randomly generated. Therefore, just because a number has not come up for several games, it does not mean that the number will 'hit' the next time out. Technically speaking, a single number could never come up for dozens of games in a row because of the random number generators used at most casinos may simply never pick it.

  • If your online casino offers free practice games, it is advisable to take advantage of this, as it can help you get a feel for the game and ensure you do not make a mistake in picking your numbers.

  • Play for fun only. This is good advice for any game of chance. If you play expecting to win, you will be sorely disappointed, as big wins in Keno are rare. Play for fun and without expectations of winning, and you will then be pleasantly surprised if you do win.

  • Decide on a bankroll and stick to it. Whatever amount of money you decide on, do not spend more than that. If you do, it will likely only lead to further loses.

Hitting a Slot Machine Jackpot

Reporting to the IRS

Many players dream of hitting a big jackpot when they play the slots but some are not sure of exactly what happens when they do win. They also have questions about the taxes they must pay on their winnings. Here is a look at what happens when you hit a jackpot on the slot machines.
Hand Paid Jackpots

When you hit the winning combination of symbols for a large jackpot your slot machine will lock up. Depending on the machine any of the following will happen: The lights on top of the machine will come on and start flashing, music will start playing or bells will ring and their might be a message across the screen reading “call attendant.” In most casinos and electronic signal is sent back to a central monitoring room and they are aware that a large jackpot was hit.

On smaller jackpots under $5,000 an attendant will come by and verify that you did hit the jackpot and then get your money. In the case of a larger or progressive jackpot they may have technicians come and check the machine to certify that it was functioning properly when the jackpot hit. If you hit one of the wide are progressive machines such as MegaBucks the slot companies that operate the game will come out and verify that machine before giving you a check.

When you hit a jackpot you have the option of taking your winnings in cash or check. Usually very large amounts will be paid by check. In the case of the MegaBucks or similar multi-million dollar jackpots, you will be paid a check for the partial amount and then you have 90 days to decide if you want to be paid a lump sum or an annual annuity on the balance.

IRS Reporting

All casino winnings are subject to federal taxes however the IRS only requires the casinos to report any wins over $1,200 on slot and video poker machines or other games such as keno, lottery or hose racing. When you have a win equal to or greater than $1200, you will be issued a W-2G form. This form lists your name, address and social security number. The casinos are not required to take out withholding tax on jackpots under $5,000 as long you supply your social security number. If you don’t provide your social security number the casinos will withhold 28 percent on smaller jackpots.

You can request a specific amount of withholding tax to be taken out on any jackpot you win. Some player like to do this to avoid a big tax payment in April when the file their income tax returns. The additional withholding may not be necessary if you keep a log book.

The law allows you to deduct gambling loses up to the amount of your winnings. You can only do this if you have documentation of your losses. Keeping a diary or logbook, is the way to do this.

Proper Identification

The casino will require proper identification before you are paid your jackpot. U.S. casinos can refuse to pay you until you produce proper identification. Your identification must have your photo on it. You can use a driver’s license, Military ID or passport. As a rule of thumb, if it were able to board an airline flight with the ID then it will be valid in the casino to claim your jackpot.

If you don’t produce an ID you will be photographed and the casino will hold your winnings until you come back with proper ID. This is the reason you should always carry a valid form of identification with you when you visit the casino.

When the casinos check your identification they will also be checking your age to make sure you are legally old enough to be playing. The minimum age for gambling varies from State to State but under age gamblers will not be paid if they hit a jackpot. This is the law in all jurisdictions and it has been upheld in the courts.

Plan Ahead

Before you start playing your favorite slot machines you should have a plan for what you will do when you hit a jackpot. Players get very excited when the hit the big one and this may affect the decisions they make about their winnings. It will be helpful if you know ahead of time how much withholding you want taken out or if you want a check for all or some of the amount. Regardless what decisions you make, don’t forget to bring your ID with you when you play.

Blackjack Basic Strategy

Learning the Chart

Blackjack basic strategy is based on the mathematics of the game. It has been tested and refined through computer simulations. When it is followed correctly it reduces the house edge to the minimum, which is usually about one-half of a percent. Minor adjustments are made to basic strategy depending on certain rule variations that the different casinos can chose to use. For example some casinos will allow you to double down after splitting (DOS) and some do not allow it. There are also some changes made to basic strategy for single and multiple deck games.
If you want to be a successful blackjack player you will need to learn basic strategy. Most players start learning by referring to a basic strategy chart. The strategy chart shows you how to play your first two cards based on the dealers up card.

Referring back to the Blackjack 101 article, you know that the house gains its edge by the fact that the player must act first. Since the basic strategy chart only deals with the first two cards, you will also need to learn what decisions to make after taking a hit.

Translate the Chart
The best way to do this is to translate the basic strategy chart into plain English that explains how to play a hand with three or more cards. Let's look at an example:

If your first two cards are and a 5 and a 3 you have a total of eight. The chart tells you to hit. You draw another 3, which gives you a total of eleven. The chart tells you to double on 11 but you can only double on your first two cards. Therefore you must hit.

When we translate the strategy chart into plain English, we use the word "otherwise" when dealing with situations that are different because of multiple cards. If we were to write out the example above it would be:
If you have 11 - double, otherwise hit.

I have written out how to handle multi card decisions for hard hands, soft hands and split pairs. I have placed this information into three "How to Play" pages that you can link to below. Here is how to play basic strategy when there are more than two cards involved written out in plain English.

How to Play Hard Hands

A hard hand is two starting cards that do not contain an ace.

If you have eight or less, always hit.
If you have Nine: Double if the dealer has 3 thru 6 - otherwise hit.
If you have Ten : Double if the dealer has 2 thru 9 - otherwise hit.
If you have Eleven: Double if the dealer has 2 thru 10, Hit if dealer has Ace.
If you have Twelve: Hit if the dealer has 2 or 3, Stand if the dealer has 4 thru 6, otherwise hit.
If you have 13- 16: Stand if the dealer has2 thru 6, otherwise hit.
If you have 17 - 21: Always Stand.

How to Play Soft Hands

A soft hand is when one of your starting hands contains an ace.

If you have Ace 2 or Ace 3: Double if the dealer has 5 or 6 - otherwise hit.
If you have Ace 4 or Ace 5: Double if the dealer has 4 thru 6 - otherwise hit.
If you have Ace 6: Double if the dealer has 3 thru 6 - otherwise hit.
If you have Ace 7: Stand if the dealer has 2, 7 or 8. Double 3 -thru 6 - otherwise hit.
If you have Ace 8 or Ace 9: Always Stand.

How to Play Pairs

If you have a pair of Aces or Eights: Always split.
If you have a pair of twos or threes: Split if the dealer has 2 - 7, otherwise hit.
If you have a pair of fours: Split if the dealer has 5 or 6 - otherwise hit.
If you have a pair of fives: Double if the dealer has 2 thru 9 - otherwise hit.
If you have a pair of sixes: Split if the dealer has 2 thru 6 - otherwise hit.
If you have a pair of sevens: Split 2 thru 7 - otherwise hit.
If you have a pair of nines: Split 2 thru 6, and 8 or 9. Stand if the dealer has 7, 10 or Ace.
If you have a pair of tens: Always Stand.

Translating the Blackjack Basic Strategy Chart into plain English makes it a lot easier to memorize. You can even make up flash cards to help you learn.

HISTORY OF THE GAME

Because slot machines are relative newcomers to the gambling scene, there?s little doubt about their history or their evolution. Early slots prototypes date back only as far as 1870. Even though Charles Fey didn?t develop his first slot machine until 1894, and it wasn?t the first slot machine, he is universally considered the Father of the Slot Machine.

Originally from the Bavarian region in Germany, Fey?s life took a series of serendipitous twists, ultimately leading to his immigration to America. He first settled in New Jersey before moving west to California. Shortly after moving to California, Fey was diagnosed with tuberculosis in his twenties. The doctors gave him a year to live, but he managed to cheat death and alter the course of gambling history.

It wasn?t until Fey was in his early thirties that he devised the first slot machine in 1895. His early influence has survived and can be seen even on today?s modern computerized machines. It was during his tenure at a Munich farm tool factory that he developed his insatiable appetite for anything mechanical, and a mechanical savant was born.

Slots history can be divided into three distinguishable eras, each leaving a lasting footprint on the industry today:

  • The mechanical era

  • The electromechanical era

  • The computerized era

  • Fey's prototype mechanical machine used cards rather than the fruit we see today. It did, however, ring a bell each time the player won, an amenity that has survived the test of time.

Fey is probably best known for his cast-iron Liberty Bell slot. Each of three reels held ten symbols. Three of the same symbols on the pay line paid the jackpot, with a one in one-thousand chance of winning the jackpot.

    The Mechanical Era
Fey owned the mechanical era through his introduction of the three-reel slot machine. Just as Bill Gates? dominance of the computer industry began in his garage, Fey?s dominance of the slots industry began in his basement. Based loosely on the lottery game, Policy, Fey placed his slot machines on a 50% rental basis.

    The Electromechanical Era
The electromechanical era dominated the mid-twentieth century-the lackluster era of the slot machine. The highlight of the era was the release of Big Bertha, who was soon upstaged by Super Big Bertha. Super Big Bertha cost north of $150,000 to produce, was powered by a five-horsepower motor, and had 8 reels with 20 symbols per reel. All this power paid back only 80% to the players and the odds of hitting the jackpot were only 1 in 25.6 billion.

    The Computerized Era
Today?s machines are computerized, relying on pre-programmed random number generators to generate numbers that correspond to patterns of symbols on the reels. Many machines use video to simulate reels, and fewer and fewer machines accept coins. Slots are rapidly moving into the coinless era, and players are moving from the casinos to the Internet slots, a venue that allows them instant play regardless of their location. The internal workings of today?s machine bear little technological resemblance to the original Fey machine, but the look and feel of the slot machine still bears Charles Fey?s indelible stamp.

    FIVE VIDEO POKER TIPS

  • Do NOT use Auto Hold: Some online casino software will offer the options of the software automatically holding the best cards of a dealt hand and playing the entire hand out for you. The problem with this is if you are trying to go after a royal flush or a straight, it may not recognize this and instead keep high cards hoping for a pair result. As good as some of this software is, it may not be optimized for your strategy, so if you are serious about winning you will want to play the cards yourself.

  • Have a strategy: This ties into the first tip a bit- if you don’t have a strategy, auto hold won’t matter. But you should have a strategy, as video poker has a little bit of skill involved and is not based on just luck. For instance, you may have a pair of aces in your hand, but if you also have a KQJ, you may want to break up that pair and see if you can get a 10 to complete your straight, and especially if it is of the same suit- which means you would win with a Royal Flush. So basically, how you play your hands depends on how much you want to win- smaller, more frequent amounts with pairs or one big amount with a huge hand. It’s up to you, but the point is to have a strategy and stick with it.

  • Play max coins: This should be a part of your strategy, no matter what it is. If you can play with a quarter but up to three coins, then play the full 75 cents. If you hit on a big hand and didn’t play max coins, I guarantee you will be sorry. If this is the case, you will not hit on that big bonus amount; instead you will find a much smaller amount coming your way. Playing max coins means that you will win the max amount of money for any hand you hit on, and this is always a good thing.

  • Look for games with bonus rounds or Progressive jackpots: Bonus rounds and Progressive jackpots are great ways to increase your winnings, and quick! A bonus round means you can further push your wager and possibly double your money or more. A Progressive jackpot is an amount of money that grows with each play then is paid out to one lucky, random winner who gets the right hand. Either way, they are a thrill to win and require max coins, as stated in the last point.

  • Take your time: This is especially true if you are playing multi-hand Video Poker. There is not time limit- you will not hit on a better hand or have better results if you rush through your games. All rushing does is lead to reckless play and more losses. Take your time, and use your strategy. Not only will this prolong play, allowing for more bang for your buck but it ensures better play and therefore better results. Practicing also helps you with your strategy and will help you see the benefits of slower play when it comes to Video Poker.

    FIVE SLOTS MACHINE TIPS

  • Play max coins: If you only play a single coin, you will win a minimal amount, no matter how good a combination of symbols you hit on. If you play max coins, however you will be eligible for things like higher payouts or even a Progressive jackpot, if one is attached to your particular Slot machine.

  • Understand paylines: This is mostly aimed at Video Slots, which can sometimes have as much as 25 paylines. You must understand that in cases like these, it is not enough to play max coins. You can play max coins, but if you only did it on one payline and there are 25, then you still will not win the biggest payout or Progressive jackpot. In order to get the biggest win possible for your symbol combination, you must play not only max coins but also max paylines. It may cost more, but when you win you will be happy you did so.

  • Do not become a zombie: A ‘zombie’ is an industry term for a Slots player who sits in front of a machine in a trance and mindlessly puts more and more money into it. If you feel yourself becoming a zombie, it’s a good idea to get up, walk around, take a break or move to another game. Staying with one machine, especially if it’s not paying out, can be frustrating and lead to big losses. Move around or take breaks, but never become a zombie.

  • Understand the bonus rounds: A bonus round is an excellent way to increase a win, but be aware that if you lose, you will lose your win, too. For instance, let’s say that you won two dollars off your spin, and you enter the bonus round. There are many ways the bonus round can be played- for instance, some ask for you to pick between black and red or a suit of cards, etc. If you pick the right one, you have increased your win. If you pick the wrong one, your win may go bye-bye. So be absolutely sure you feel comfortable with potentially losing your win before you engage in a bonus round.

  • Use the full download version of software: While it may be quicker to use the Flash version of a casino’s software, these are very limited in the amount of games they offer. If a casino advertises 100 games you can play, they are talking about the downloadable version, not Flash or Java. In fact, the no-download versions usually have a bare-bones amount of games, and only a small fraction of the Slots games you would have if you used the full version. So if you want the max amount of fun Slots games to choose from, always use the fully downloadable version.

    FIVE BLACKJACK TIPS

Blackjack has one of the lowest house odds of any casino game- meaning the player has a greater chance of winning than at most games. Unfortunately, most people don’t realize this and go in blind, therefore giving a greater advantage to the casino. But with a little practiced of the following tips, you can make sure you keep that advantage down to a minimum:

  • Have a plan: Know how much you are willing to spend, and how much you are going to wager on each hand. If you have $100 to spend on Blackjack and want to play lots of hands, go to a table with a minimum bet of one to five dollars. If you want to try to increase your money quickly, then play at a table with a higher limit, like ten to twenty dollars per hand. No matter what your strategy is, the important thing is to make sure you have one and stick to it.

  • Never chase losses: This is good advice for any game, but especially Blackjack. Chasing losses means you get beat on a hand and lose a chunk of money, then play overly aggressive on the next hands to ‘make up for it’. This can only lead to bad decision making, and therefore more losses. If you lose a big hand and continue to play, play like nothing happened at all, and you will not fall into the trap of chasing losses.

  • Play variation rules, if possible: A good example of this would be the ‘surrender’ rules that some casinos offer. This means that a player can surrender their hand and only lose half their wager under certain conditions. Of course, this means less intake for the casino, so very few offer it. But if they do, be sure to take advantage of the situation. You may also want to look for the rare tables where the dealer has to stand on 16 instead of 17, which helps decrease the house advantage.

  • Check your bonus rules: This is a tip that is unique to online casinos. At an online casino, there will be a wagering requirement for any bonus that you may accept, and there are usually some games that are restricted as a part of this requirement. Unfortunately, Blackjack is more often than not one of those games. If you signed up at a casino where this is the case and wish to play all or mostly Blackjack, you will want to contact customer service about your options, which include having the bonus removed if need be.

  • Practice, practice, practice: Practice makes perfect. And although there is some luck involved in a game like Blackjack, it is also one of the few gambling games where skill plays just as big a part as luck. So it is in your best interest to practice. Since bluffing or having a ‘poker face’ is not needed, it matters not whether you practice online or at home with friends and family. As long as you get some playing time in. A good place to go is the online casinos- many offer free, no-wager games that you can use to practice without losing the shirt off your back- so take advantage of this and good luck!

How people can play Casino Online ??????????

There are many great views to this branch of learning, that we are going to review carefully inside this learn about online casino article so that you may learn the most from it.
I am positive you`ve wondered to yourself, why should I be wagering on-line?
Unfortunately, most of us do not get the chance to visit Las Vegas or any other real gaming halls as frequently as we would like. This is why web-based casino gambling is such a huge success across the globe. Shortly I`ll try to sum up the pros and cons of online gambling - from my point of view.
    The good news:
You get a complimentary wagering room program for your home computer.
Many on line wagering room brands will let you participate for amusement for as long as you choose.
You do not need to pay off anyone.
The majority of on line betting room brands provide new and existing gambler free money bonuses.
You may gamble from your home or the office - providing you`re permitted to, of course.
wagering room betting regulations are often more beneficial online than in real land-based gaming rooms - odds on wagering hall are more beatable on the internet than off line.
There`s extremely intense competition among more than 1500 various betting hall brands available from which to select. It`s a corporate death fight among the online casinos - the objective of the gambling room brands presently is to be the most successful in attracting fresh clientele as well as to keep existing users returning. It has turned this online betting industry into a market for players - we are able to simply shop around in new user complimentary cash casino incentives, comps credit programs, recurring monthly free money casino bonuses, coupon codes promoting special promos, top prize raffles et cetera.
    The NOT so great information:
How will you truly ensure that the on line gambling hall business is dealing a respectable hand?
Because the main gambling room computer software brands are huge corporations - they can`t endanger their credibility by not dealing a fair game.
Most wagering room website systems get the payment rates checked and audited by large accounting groups monthly - we`re typically talking about dependable accounting firms.
Negative feedback spreads fast on the World Wide Web - and gaming hall website will actually earn more cash in the long run through dealing a respectable hand and thus ensure the users return for more.
You cannot get prize money immediately when you have earned some. You`ll have to hold off for a bank check sent by regular post or through messenger, a wire payment or the like - depends on your preference. Nonetheless, you can`t receive your payment right away as in Vegas or other real gambling halls.
on line gambling hall Gambling remains a very loose business - and one gaming hall has been proven to cheat with their chances. The major corporations really bear a precious reputation as well as brand to maintain.
I recommend the larger online gambling hall computer software brands unless you have had an alternative gaming site suggested by people that you trust.

    Gaming machines in CASINO

There are four types of gaming machines used in CASINO
    • Pachinko
    • Slot machine
    • Video Lottery Terminal
    • Video poker
    Pachinko

Pachinko machines were first built during the 1920s as a children's toy, then emerged as an adult pastime in Nagoya around 1930. All of Japan's pachinko parlors were closed down during World War II, but re-emerged in the late 1940s and have remained popular since then.

Originally, machines had a spring-loaded lever for shooting the balls individually, but modern machines use a round "throttle" that merely controls how quickly an electrically fired plunger shoots your balls onto the playfield. The balls then drop through an array of pins, and usually simply fall through to the bottom, but occasionally fall into gates that make the machine pay out more balls.

    Slot machine

A person playing a slot machine purchases the right to play by inserting coins, cash, or in newer machines, a bar-coded paper ticket (known as "ticket in/ticket out" machines), into a designated slot on the machine. The machine is then activated by means of a lever or button, or on newer machines, by pressing a touchscreen on its face. The game itself may or may not involve skill on the player's part — or it may create the illusion of involving skill without actually being anything else than a game of chance.

The object of the game is to win money from the machine. The game usually involves matching symbols, either on mechanical reels that spin and stop to reveal one or several symbols, or on a video screen. The symbols are usually brightly colored and easily recognizable, such as images of fruits, and simple shapes such as bells, diamonds, or hearts.

    Video Lottery Terminal

A Video Lottery Terminal or VLT is a gaming machine that allows gamblers to bet on the outcome of a video game.

A VLT is similar to a slot machine, except that it is connected to a centralized computer system that determines the outcome of each wager using a random number generator. Although the outcome of each wager is random, VLT operators are able to program in advance the total amount and number of payouts that its central computer system will allow at its connected VLTs. In this manner, VLTs can be thought of as computerized scratch-off lottery tickets.

    Video poker

Video poker is a casino game based on five-card draw poker. It is played on a computerized console which is a similar size to a slot machine.

    Categories of casino games

There are three general categories of casino games:

    [1] Gaming machines

Gaming machines, such as slot machines and pachinko, are usually played by one player at a time and do not require the involvement of casino employees to play.

    [2] Random number games

Random number games are based upon the selection of random numbers, either from a computerized random number generator or from other gaming equipment. Random number games may be played at a table, such as Roulette, or through the purchase of paper tickets or cards, such as Keno or Bingo.

    [3] Card Games

There are lots of card games for casino and non-casino.

What is Casino and when It start?

    Very Interesting about Casino.

    CASINO MEANS

The term originally meant a small villa, summerhouse or pavilion built for pleasure, usually on the grounds of a larger Italian villa or palazzo. There are examples of such casinos at Villa Giulia and Villa Farnese. During the 19th century, the term casino came to include other more public buildings where pleasurable activities, including gambling and sports, took place.

    THE CASINO GAMING INDUSTRY

Coming to the New World, the first European colonists brought with them not only the will and determination to lay claim to the land, but their affinity for
games of chance. Horse racing, cockfighting, and county-sponsored lotteries (similar to today's state-sponsored lotteries) fueled an appetite for betting and wagering by the country's new population. Lotteries, in fact, were so popular, they quickly generated huge revenues for fledgling county governments. Lottery money funded many civic projects, including the building of colleges and universities. Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Princeton, and Columbia all owe their existence, in part, to the gambling passion that swept the country at the time.

    CASINO GAMBLING'S GOLDEN ERA

After the Revolutionary War, all manners of gambling continued to flourish, meeting little opposition from lawmakers and the public in general. During the
early 1800s gambling on riverboats along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers became fashionable. From New Orleans to Cincinnati and all points in between, magnificent floating palaces graced the waters with genteel sophistication. Women strolling the outside decks would wait for their male companions inside the ship's smoky parlors, chasing dreams of fame and fortune. Most of these early steamships and paddlewheelers operated as a way for people to gamble in comfort and style. They also afforded passengers a pleasant means of transportation. In other parts of the country, especially in urban areas such as New York and Chicago, gambling halls began to see a more refined and social clientele; they were often frequented by members of the upper class who could afford to lose big. As a result gambling halls grew rapidly, changing into large, complex organizations run on business principles rather than Lady Luck. They also became major employers, positively impacting the surrounding neighborhoods. Gambling became an integral part of the atmosphere in the frontier cities of the West as well.

And so it went throughout much of the nineteenth century: rich and poor, young and old, city dwellers and homesteaders shared a common interest in gambling. The wealthy choose the sport of roulette or horse racing; the poor, three-card monte; cowboys and gold rushers, poker. But whatever the game, the results were the same. The citizenry embraced gambling, found it exhilarating, amusing, challenging, and of course, at times frustrating, but always moral and legal. So what happened to change public opinion? What caused gambling, a pastime tightly woven into the fabric of early American society, to suddenly become illegal in most of the country?
